In the offline game design workshop, participants would form teams and design physical games using pens, paper, dice, chips and other simple tools. This event requires no experience in art design, UI design, animations or programming, an interest in game design and some experience of playing video games is more than enough.
The event is divided into two parts. In the first part, participants would learn about Rules/Play/Experience (Mechanics-Dynamics-Aesthetics framework), an experience-oriented game design methodology, by video game examples. In the second part, participants would form teams to create physical games using props such as papers, pens, dice and chips to generate the experience of existing video games participants have played before. Within two hours, participants would be able to experience major steps in game developments, like the creation of core gameplay, trial and error iteration, and beta testing. Through practising the RPE methodology, participants can improve their ability and experience in designing games.
